Inflation? Chemical pollution? and even taxi-fares. These are just some of the
topics that students from various post-secondary institutions in Singapore
have addressed in their creative videos for the inaugural EDB Economics short
film competition last year. ACS ( Independent) is proud to be hosting the
event once again this year with the theme-- sports and leisure. Each team had
to make a short oral presentation as well as face the judges in a question and
answer session. How do our Singapore students apply economic concepts to this
theme? Come on down on 5th March 2010 (1.30pm to 3.30pm - Centre for
Performing Arts 1) to find out.

In 2009

On the 4th March 2009, the Economics, Business & Management Department organised the inaugural EDB Pre—University Economics Short Film Competition.  This event seeks to bring together Pre-universities from local as well as international schools in Singapore to illustrate how economics is seen in various aspects of our daily lives.  The school is proud to have the Economic Development Board (EDB) as the main sponsor for the event as well as key partners from Citi-NIE Financial Literacy Hub and Razor TV.

During the finals, Brenda Lim, Debbie Goh, Teo Munching from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) together with Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC), Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and Global Indian International School (GIIS) were short-listed and competed to see who can bring home the honours of winning the challenge trophy as well as $500 worth of Borders Gift Cards.

Each team had to make a short oral presentation as well as face the judges in a question and answer session.  After much deliberation, the 3 external judges from EDB, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and NIE picked the team from ACS(Independent) to be the winners!  The judges were most impressed with film’s ability to combine the use of animation, originality in the approach as well as a clear demonstration of the effects of negative externalities.

Besides the short films, our school had the pleasure of having Mr Daryl Chin and Ms Sara Ann K from Razor TV to be the invited guest speakers.  Together, they captivated the audience with their engaging style of presentation and impromptu interviews with members of the audience. Daryl shared about one of Razor TV’s social experiments which saw him disguising himself as a beggar in the heartlands of Singapore in order to gauge the reactions from the public! They also shared valuable tips on how make a memorable impression when it comes to interviewing other people. These tips will prove to be invaluable to pre-university students embarking on their upcoming Extended Essays and Project Work.
